By Davide Cali and Illustrated by Benjamin Chaud
From the very first page I found myself giggling. A funny thing happened on the way to school is the story of a boy telling his teacher the simple reason he is late for school. Readers are taken on an action packed adventure through time and space. Excuse after excuse, tall tale after tall tale this experience of a boy's crazy journey to school one day will have the whole family laughing. Mole people, a strange blob, Bigfoot and even a massive ape all make appearances along the way. And just when you think things cannot get any stranger some time travel takes place. This book is filled with wonderful illustrations by award winning illustrator Benjamin Chaud. I think this is sure to become a classic. Pick yourself up a copy today.

If I Were You
by Leslie Margolis
Best friends Katie and Melody envy each others lives
because they are under the impression that the other one leads the perfect life.
Katie has two younger stepbrothers whom she babysits for and it is always noisy
at her house. Melody, on the other hand, lives in a mansion and always wears
the best stuff. Unfortunately, things aren't looking too good right now because Katie and Melody are not talking.
While riding the bus to the beach on the last day of summer,
Katie makes a wish that she could be Melody as the bus emerges from the
Crescent Moon Tunnel (something Melody and her always did when riding the bus
to the beach). Melody is also on the bus with Kevin, a boy Katie called dibs on
first. It's silly to think that the wish will come true but Katie feels a
tingling sensation and next thing she knows she's in Melody's body sitting next
to Kevin! Katie and Melody have switched bodies and now they get to redo summer
as one another. Along the way, they will learn some surprises and maybe figure
out for once and all who really has the better life.
The Traveling Circus
The Traveling Circus |
Marie-Louise Gay has written a series of books in which
Charlie and his family travel the world.
There’s Travels With My Family, On the Road Again, Summer in the City
and the latest installment, The Travelling Circus.
Charlie’s parents are quite adventurous and often take
their children to obscure places. In
this chapter book, the family travels to Croatia and discovers many interesting
places and characters along the way.
Max, Charlie’s younger brother, often gets himself into trouble,
but Charlie is always there to rescue him.
When Max gets lost touring an old church, his mother panics. But Charlie
finds him – he can always figure out where Max has gone. Max also falls out of their fishing boat but
luckily gets caught in the fishing net and hauled back into the boat.
At one point, Max and Charlie get lost together in a maze
made of low stone walls. Just when they
think they have found the way out they encounter the hermit of Vrgada: “It was a man who looked like a scarecrow… In one hand he was holding the skin of an
animal. In the other hand he had a heavy
stick.” (131) Max and Charlie make their
escape, and discover that no one ever sees the hermit of Vrgada -- except them.
Most of their adventures are more lighthearted. When the power goes out one night, Max and
Charlie discover their parents and all the other adults dancing to music from
the car radio while the headlights illuminate the scene. They learn that you don’t always have to
speak the same language to communicate, as many different people, including Croatians, Slovakians and Canadians join in their
dance.
The Traveling Circus is ultimately a story about a quirky, curious family that loves discovering different cultures -- but they always return home to Montreal. Great read-aloud for the Kindergarten/Grade 1 set. Grades K-3.
